In a world not unlike ours, Muses and their Guardians have walked alongside humankind since the beginning of time. From birth Muses assume they are just like everyone else. Not until their twenty-fifth birthdays do they discover their talents have a special purpose, and that Guardians, with their superhuman abilities, will help them in that purpose whether they want that help or not.

Shelby has worked hard to make a life for herself. Her parents died when she was young, and her husband left her with two kids. When her ex-husband comes back to town, he has more to say than just “I’m sorry” he's a Guardian, and his new assignment is her. She is a Muse now, one coming into her own no matter how hard she fights it, and trouble stalks her wherever she goes. Her ex-husband can't keep up and, with their history, she doesn't want him to. To complicate matters, there’s another Guardian around when she needs help, and they are falling for each other. He has a dark past that’s trying to reclaim him, and Shelby is in the way. But she has to accept her Museness and figure out fast what being a Muse really means if she is to keep herself and her children alive.

This book does have really interesting bones to it. The idea of a muse and it's guardian is not something I've really ever heard of before. But by 50% through I really wanted to throw in the towel. 1) Shelby was so ignorant about the relationship of the muse/guardian while everyone around her knew exactly what to expect when they heard she was a muse. 2) Not much action. Sure there is the big scene towards the end but other than that - not much going on other than her trying to stay away from Cal. 3) *Spoiler******* Why couldn't she focus on her son when she was telling her long ass story about what happened with Jerry. She waited until the end because she kept forgetting to tell the most important part. Then after the bonding scene - there is all this talk talk talk - instead of going to help her son. Then they say "Let's get Shel in the shower and I'll fill you in". She realizes how gross she is then they take the time to test out her hand/arm. Whatever, as a mom, that just ticked me off. Her son is an after through with all of her life's drama.
I won't read another book if it is released. I liked the idea of the story but overall I did not *bond* with it.

MUSE Shelby Hammond Muse Prophecy Book 1 eBook Susie M Hanley Reviews

I'm almost irritated that this was so enjoyable. For the most part I don't care for the genre and have openly mocked it. I rarely connect with female leads unless they go above and beyond to not be girls, but that wasn't the case here. I found Shelby's down to earthness, believable amounts of control regarding her emotions, and ability to stand on her own but still take help when needed realistically well crafted. Aside from the instant familiarity with the locations setting me at ease, I really enjoyed the introduction to a new realm of fantasy. The whole of the Muse/Guardian species(?) seems very well constructed and to have a depth to it that has barely been exposed with this installment. I very much so enjoyed the snippets and quotes at the beginning of each chapter and look forward to not only learning more about them, but also what MAGRA really does and why, the Captain and crew (Who? What? Where? Why? Pirates?), and OMG what did Malcom do? The only "complaints" I can think of are as follows;
Why is that blue? Can I click it? I can't click it. Why is part of this blue?
A few minor typos.
Seriously, why is this blue? Is it blue in the book?

I read this book several months ago, reviewing it on my blog at blogspot. I'm quite impressed with Ms. Hanley's writing, the way her story flows, the characters and their interactions with each other, and the explanations for things one wouldn't normally have, given this book has beings not of this world (at least that we know of!). Therefore, given this is Ms. Hanley's first written work, I'm quite impressed and see nothing but great things coming from her in the future.

The Main Character is very well written, explained, she's articulate, strong and independent. She could be anyone you know in your every day life that makes you feel like you are a better person for knowing them. I know, I have a few friends like that.

The Male Characters that the Female Lead comes in contact with give just enough tension to make the story flow well, then as we come to the climax of the book, and more information is revealed about who and what they are, the question still remains as to which one, or IF one should stay in her life.

Her friends are awesome and like any good friends, are there to help her deal with life. What she doesn't know is life isn't what she thinks it is. So, this is definitely one of those books that reels you in and you can't put it down until you finish it. At least I couldn't, and I've been patiently waiting for the next installment..... PLEASE HURRY! - Melisa Rechenmacher
This book had some great bits. The heroine was interesting and complex and seemed like a real person, the secondary characters were interesting, the general idea of Muses and Guardians also interesting.
But.
There's Muses and Guardians in this world. Great. Why does Shelby - the main character - know nothing about them? Nothing. Not a thing. She knows they exist, and that's about it. Apparently they're a major global force with a ruling body that controls their every move, but I say "apparently" because it's never actually explained. Few things are.
So Shelby is a Muse, which you would think would entitle her to some of the secrets about Guardians and Muses. You'd be wrong. She's spoon-fed dribbles of information here and there, mostly when she's done something that gives her a seizure or when she's killing someone accidentally. This woman is surrounded by people who Know What's Going On - but they won't tell her about it unless they absolutely have to, and then they give her the absolute bare minimum of information she needs to stay alive and not kill anybody. What, it never occurred to this international ruling body of Guardians and Muses to issue a handbook? Or at least sit the poor girl down at some point for a Guardian-and-Muse 101?

Cal - her ex-husband - returns to be her Guardian, despite the fact that he cruelly dumped her when she was a teenager, pregnant, with a toddler. To Shelby's credit, she doesn't think this is such a hot idea, either. And Cal certainly doesn't endear himself to her. So WHY, for the love of God, does she allow him back into her life? He makes these sweeping statements about what MUST be and how things HAVE to go and she just.....goes along with it. Because she doesn't know anything about being a Muse. See above, where Shelby is never given any information about anything.
The bit about the bad guy kidnapping her to take her back to his polygamist compound seems like it was grafted on from another story. It had nothing to do with anything. The character had nothing to do with anything.
Malcolm is an interesting character but hey, guess what? We learn almost nothing about him! And he doesn't give Shelby much to go on, either. He's just not an a**hole like Cal, so Shelby likes him better. Except she's not allowed to "bond" with him. Why? Uh, because. Cal said so. And the other Guardians said so. Kind of. Only not really. Because again - no information. Which Shelby passively accepts.

This would be a nifty urban fantasy and a nice bit of world-building if it had been competently edited. Instead, it's a jumble of interesting scenes, plot holes, frustratingly mysterious characters, a gaping hole where the Muse-and-Guardian relationship is explained (which would make a good quarter of the book way more understandable), a misplaced bad guy who seems to be there more for a lovingly detailed torture-porn scene than anything else, an evil plot by shadowy figures that gets tacked on in the final quarter of the book, and an ending that fizzles out with no resolution of anything. Maybe it's supposed to make us want to buy the next book, but I'll give it a pass.
